- Story Text: Israel has beefed up its security forces on the first anniversary
of the attacks on New York and Washington even as
Islamic militants at home warned of more strikes to come.
Israeli security was on high alert on Wednesday
(September 11, 2002) fearing an attack on the anniversary of the
attacks on New York's World Trade Center and The Pentagon in
Washington. Ben-Gurion international airport near Tel Aviv has
tightened it's security. Passengers had to stand in queues to
pass the security checks, and needed to arrive several hours
before their flight.
In Gaza, Abdel-Aziz Rantissi, a leader of the Hamas, has
blamed the American humiliating and oppressive policy for the
September eleventh attack which he referred to as an
'accident'. Rantissi said, "I believe that the main enemy of
the Unites states of America is the policy of the United
States of America. The humiliation of others, the oppression
and aggression against the Islamic people will lead in the
future to the same accidents like that in the eleventh of
September. So America should change it's policy, without that
they should expect the same accidents in the future," he said.
In the West Bank city of Ramallah, resident Riad Moussa
said that the Palestinians have suffered dearly after the
September eleventh attack. He said that the world's public
opinion has changed towards them, and has ceased to be
supportive. He said, "We are seeing that the world has
changed, people are not looking the same, looking before
eleventh of September to the Palestinians like they looked
after. Now they look at the Palestinian people and comparing
us to Osama bin Laden, they see us as terrorists, and not as
people who want to fight to who want to get thier freedom, so
I think it is very bad it has a very bad effect on the
Palestinian people and the Palestinian case (cause)."
Riad claims the the people responsible for last years
attack were misrepresenting the Islamic people, "Personally I
think it is done by extremists who don't understand anything
about the modern life. I don't believe that this is the true
face of Islam, as they are trying to represent, I think they
are fundamental people who do not understand what is going on
in front of them."
In Jerusalem people were expressing fear, saying that the
attack on America is also is an attack on Israel, since
America is Israel's supporter:
Israeli David Barium said, "Two flaming towers, this is what I
see in my mind. The terrorist attack upon America is not only
an attack on America it is an attack on all the free world,
especially Israel. It is very sad to hear today that many people
in the world think that the jews in Israel is responsible for this attack. I do hope that very soon the world will understand that
Israel is not responsible for this attack and the true responsible
for this attack will be caught and put to trial, said David
Barium.
