- Story Text: Israeli forces assaulting Palestinian President Yasser
Arafat's compound have ordered Paletsinians holed up in the
compound to surrender. Eight Palestinians put their hands on
their heads as they approached the Israeli military forces.
Eight Palestinians surrendered to Israeli troops at
Yasser Arafat's besieged presidential compound on Thursday
(September 19) after Israel demanded the hand over militants
it said were holed up inside.
It was not clear whether any of the men taken into Israeli
custody in the West Bank city of Ramallah were among the 19 or
20 which Israeli officials said were wanted for their alleged
involvement in attacks on Israelis.
Israeli forces assaulted Arafat's compound just hours
after a Palestinian suicide bomber killed five people and
wounded about 50 on a bus in Tel Aviv.
Israeli soldiers who had taken up position at the compound
ordered the Palestinian prisoners, all dressed in civilian
clothes, to put their hands on their heads as they approached,
witnesses said. Troops blindfolded the men and tied their
hands behind their backs.
At the same time, Israeli armoured bulldozers demolished
caravans that had been set up outside Arafat's headquarters
for use as offices and sleeping quarters after Israeli forces
destroyed buildings during earlier sieges.
