- Story Text: Israeli left and right wing demonstrators have scuffled
outside a military prison where Israeli military reservists,
who refused to serve in the Palestinian territories, are
jailed.
Tuesdays (April 2) protest, on a hill overlooking a
military prison in northern Israel began peacefully enough.
Activists held banners and shouted their support for young
men jailed by Israel for refusing to serve in the military.
An increasing number of Israeli reservists who have
refused to serve in the occupied West Bank and Gaza strip
(know locally as refuseniks) have been jailed in the military
prison in Atlit, near the Israeli port city of Haifa.
In February, a group of so-called refuseniks launched the
most concerted opposition to military policy to come from the
army's own ranks in more than 18-months of bloodshed. Their
petition criticised military action in the West Bank and Gaza
Strip.
Thousands of military reservists have been sent to the
West Bank and Gaza Strip to pursue Israeli Prime Minister
Ariel Sharon's military operation to crush an 18-month-old
Palestinian revolt against occupation and to punish
Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.
