- Story Text: The Arab League Council, which has been meeting in Cairo, is expected to issue a strong condemnation of United States arms supplies to Israel, at its closing session on Saturday, (7 April).
A draft resolution denounces the "increasing American association with the Israeli aggression" by the supply of sophisticated weapons. This, the Arab League regards as participation in an armed aggression on the Arab nations. The League warns if such support for Israel continues, it would jeopardise United States interest in the Arab countries.
The six day session of the League Council was expected to end on Friday (6 April), but because the political committee was still engaged on routine matters, the resolution was expected to be announced on Saturday. (April 17)
The major issue discussed at the Council meeting was the reports that the united States is going to supply Israel with more weapons, including Phantom and Skyhawk warplanes.
On Wednesday the League's Assistant Secretary General, Dr. Sayed Nofal told reporters that delegates had agreed on a plan to close down "open bridges" between Jordan and the Israeli-Occupied West Bank of the River Jordan.
The Arab League's 18 member states will hold a further council meeting next month.
