  • Story Text: Israeli Officials said on Wednesday (12 March) that Israel and Egypt remained wide apart on a new interim agreement as U.S. Secretary of State Dr. Kissinger flew to Egypt to continue his Middle East peace negotiations.

    Although Dr. Kissinger himself told reporters he remained hopeful that a further settlement involving Israeli withdrawals from Sinai could be arranged, officials in Jerusalem said ideas that the U.S. mediator had brought from Egypt had not narrowed the gap between the two countries.

    Israeli officials also said the current peace mission had now reached a crucial stage. Dr. Kissinger began further talks in Egypt on Wednesday evening and was expected to return to Jerusalem on Friday morning.

    SYNOPSIS: Jerusalem on Wednesday where the Israeli Cabinet gathered at Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin's office for talks with U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.

    Defence Minister Shimon Peres and Foreign Minister Yigal Allon were among the more important participants in the two hour meeting.

    Then Dr. Kissinger -- accompanied by U.S. Ambassador Kenneth Keating -- arrived for the Meeting that marked the end of the first stage of the Secretary of State's eleventh Middle East peace mission.

    The Israelis said after the meeting that settlement negotiations were at a crucial stage. They said Israel and Egypt still remained wide apart on a new interim agreement and maintained that the ideas Dr. Kissinger brought from Egypt on his first exchange had not narrowed the gap between the two countries.

    But Dr. Kissinger himself offered some hope when he spoke to newsmen.
