- Story Text: Hizbollah guerrillas have fired at Israeli positions in
the disputed Shebaa Farms region on the Lebanese-Israeli
border, drawing Israeli shell fire in retaliation.
Security sources and witnesses said on Wednesday
(January 23) Hizbollah guerrillas fired mortar rounds at the
Israeli positions and Israeli troops responded with shelling,
near the Lebanese village of Kfar Shouba. Israeli planes also
attacked a mountain top in the area.
There were no immediate reports of casualties.
It was the first Hizbollah attack on the area since
October.
The group has clashed with Israeli troops in Shebaa Farms,
which adjoin the Lebanese border and the Israeli-occupied
Golan Heights, since Israel ended its 22-year occupation of
south Lebanon in 2000.
Hizbollah, its Syrian backers and Beirut claim the area as
Lebanese soil, but the United Nations regards the Shebaa Farms
as Israeli-occupied Syrian land.
The shelling on Wednesday came a day after a Palestinian
gunman killed two women and wounded 14 people at the center of
Jerusalem, before he was killed by Israeli forces. Earlier on
Tuesday (January 22) Israel had killed four Palestinian
militants in a raid on building which the Israeli army said
housed what could be the largest explosives laboratory ever
discovered in the West Bank.
