- Story Text: Marwan Barghouti, head of Yasser Arafat's Fatah faction
in the West Bank, has appeared at a remand hearing in Tel Aviv
as Israel continues to attempt to prosecute him for attacks on
Israelis during the Palestinian uprising, or Intifada.
Barghouti's trial began on September 5.
Israel has charged Barghouti with murder, aiding and
abetting murder, promoting murder, attempted murder, criminal
conspiracy, and being an active member of a terrorist
organisation.
Court security attempted to prevent the popular
Palestinian leader from turning the court into a pulpit on
Thursday (November 21, 2002) as Barghouti raised his arms and
launched into what has become a trademark speech at the
beginning of each court appearance.
Thursday's appearance was the fourth since the start of
Barghouti's trial on September 5. Barghouti was arrested in
April after Israeli forces took control of the West Bank city
of Ramallah and surrounded his home.
Thursday's appearance came just hours after a Palestinian
suicide bomber blew himself up on a bus in Jerusalem, killing
11 Israelis and wounding 50. Many of the victims were
children.
Protesters outside the court in Tel Aviv on Thursday
accused Barghouti of murdering Israelis.
Israel blames Barghouti and the Palestinian Authority for
ongoing violence against Israel. Barghouti's lawyers say the
trial is unconstitutional and politically motivated.
