- Story Text: Israel tightens security ahead of Palestinian Land
Day.
Israel tightened its security in and around
Jerusalem on Tuesday (March 30), ahead of Palestinian Land
Day, fearing an increase of violence.
Palestinians in the West Bank and inside Israel have
marked Land Day since 1976, when Israeli forces killed six
Palestinians in a demonstration against the land
confiscation.
Troops set up road blocks in West Bank areas leading to
Jerusalem and police erected checkpoints in Jerusalem ahead
of scheduled demonstrations in the West Bank, Gaza and
Israel.
Most of the protests are expected to take place in West
Bank areas where Israel is building it's controversial
barrier - a project that Israel says stops suicide bombers
and Palestinians call a land grab.
Israel fears that this year the commemoration of Land
Day may turn violent after vows of revenge by Palestinian
militant groups to attack Israeli targets following
Israel's assassination last week of Hamas leader Sheikh
Ahmed Yassin.
