- Story Text: Israeli Defence Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer has
expressed regret for the Israeli army's killing of four
members of a Palestinian family in a tank raid on a Gaza Strip
village.
Israeli Defence Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer expressed
regret for the army's killing of "Palestinian innocents" in an
assault after midnight on the coastal village of Sheikh Ijleen
and demanded the army investigate.
"I have instructed to open an investigation about what
happened (in Gaza). I announced that I am sorry, deeply sorry.
One must understand that we are living at times when there are
a lot of alerts and wars and therefore, the (Israeli) forces
noticed a group of three (people) crawling on the ground and
(they) opened fire. The incident is being investigated,"
Ben-Eliezer told reporters after meeting U.S. Deputy
Assistant Secretary David Satterfield.
Israeli tanks in a pre-dawn raid on the coastal village of
Sheikh Ijleen on Thursday (August 29) killed four members of a
Palestinian family.
Israeli military sources said the army's push into the
village, the second in as many days, was spurred by
"suspicious movements of a number of people" in an area barred
to Palestinians near the Jewish settlement of Netzarim.
Asked about the seizure of the Israeli vessel in Hamburg
which German customs officials said was carrying a cargo of
military equipment for Iran, Ben-Eliezer said the ship was
bound for Thailand but added that Israeli government was
taking the matter very seriously and will conduct a full
investigation.
On Thursday (August 29) Hamburg customs officers seized
cargo containing Israeli-made tread parts for armoured
vehicles from a private Israeli ship, which docked in Hamburg
two weeks ago. Customs then informed Israel they believed the
cargo was bound for Iran.
Israel's Defence Ministry had said on Wednesday the
shipment had been authorised for export on the premise that
the cargo was headed for Thailand.
German authorities said it was up to Israel to determine
if their export control laws had been violated and that the
containers would be returned to Israel on another ship due to
depart from Hamburg on Thursday.
Iran denied any link to the ship, calling the whole affair
an Israeli propaganda move.
