- Story Text: Israeli soldiers shoot tear gas on Palestinians
demonstrating against the West Bank barrier whilst in
Jerusalem men under the age of 40 are prevented from
attending Friday prayers in the Old City.
Fifteen Palestinians were reported injured on
Friday (June 10) following stone-throwing clashes with
Israeli soldiers over the controversial construction of an
Israeli wall which cuts through Palestinian land.
Residents of the village of Marda rallied against
Israel's barrier which is intended to separate the Jewish
State from the West Bank and which will result in the
uprooting of hundreds of olive trees - a source of
livelihood for the Palestinian residents.
When the procession approached Israeli soldiers,
violence erupted as Israeli forces shot tear gas at the
demonstrators who responded with stones and rocks.
Friday demonstrations against the barrier have become a
tradition, as its building advances swiftly, in parts onto
private Palestinian private land.
The Palestinians see the barrier as a one-sided
political move designed to form a permanent border between
Israel and the Palestinian territories, in favour of
Israeli interests.
Israel says the wall is being built as a security
measure to prevent the penetration of suicide bombers into
Israel.
Palestinians, in revolt since 2000, contend that the
barrier and continued Israeli settlement expansion in
occupied West Bank areas, could relegate them to enclaves
and leave no room for the viable state they seek.
Israel denies any such intention and says the barrier
could be torn down and negotiations on Palestinian
statehood could proceed if Palestinians ended attacks on
Israelis.
The International Court of Justice in the Hague has
ruled the snaking network of razor wires and cement as
illegal.
Meanwhile, hundreds of Palestinian worshippers were
prohibited from praying at the Al Aqsa Mosque in
Jerusalem's Old City.
The worshippers were forced to pray outside the Old
City gates on Friday as Israeli police refused to allow
Muslims under the age of 40 to enter Islam's third holiest
site.
Israeli police routinely enforce strict measures at the
Old City on Fridays - the day of prayer for Muslims -
citing security threats.
