  • Story Text: A new force has made itself felt in the Israeli-Arab confrontation this week -- the Arab students of the occupied West Bank of Jordan and of Est Jerusalem.

    For four consecutive days down to Wednesday this week (20 November), they kept Israeli security forces in a state of high alert with a series of demonstrations and clashes with troops.

    The unrest developed following the appearance of Palestinian guerrilla leader, Yasser Arafat at the United Nations. In East Jerusalem, students chanted "Palestine is Arab" and "We support you, Abu Ammar" (Araft's guerrilla nickname).

    Then came stone-throwing clashes and arrests. There were similar incidents throughout the West Bank, where schoolchildren tried to stage their own demonstrations and a number of schools were closed down. In one of the earliest demonstrations, a schoolgirl died during a stone-throwing incident in Jenin.

    By Tuesday, the Israeli courts had found themselves imposing fines on 145 young people arrested during the unrest, (65 older people received sentences of up to six months imprisonment). More arrests following during Tuesday.

    At the college of Bir Zeit, students boycotted their studies and one leader declared: "We and prepared to strike indefinitely to show the Israelis that we are fully behind Yasser Arafat and we want an end to the occupation. So do our parents, but we students are the only ones who are organised."
    It was also the week that was another in the series of continuing bloody and intensely tragic skirmishes in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

    There were suggestions that the three Arab guerrillas who died in the northern Israeli township of Beit Shean -- after killing four victims -- had crossed from the Jordanian border, and that this might have been an attempt to cause a new flare-up on that sector of the border.
