- Story Text: Israeli police evicted a group of Jewish students from an abandoned hospital in the occupied West Bank town of Hebron on Monday (16 August). The students told newsmen they planned to repair the building and turn it into a synagogue or religious college. Their move came a day after ceremonies commemorating the death of 63 Jews in Hebron, during riots in 1929.
SYNOPSIS: The Israeli Minister of the Interior, Dr. Yoseph Bug, addressed a crowd of about 200 Jewish settlers and official guests at the settlement of Kiryat Arba, near Hebron. The 1929 riots started after rumours spread through the former state of Palestine that Jews had desecrated Moslem holy places in the city of Jerusalem. Hebron is the site of the Caves of the Patriarchs and of great importance to the Jewish faith. In the riots, a number of the Jewish shrines wee damaged and the 63 people were killed. The country was under British administration at the time and the authorities said the town of Hebron should be cleared of its inhabitants to avoid further friction.
The Jews return to Hebron after the 1967 Middle East war when Israel occupied the West Bank territory of the River Jordan. It was decided to crease a Jewish settlement near the old town and it was given the name Kiryat Arba.
The commemoration ceremonies brought protest from the Arab inhabitants of Hebron though. They closed their shops and called on Israel to withdraw from the occupied lands. Kiryat Arba is one of the officially recognised settlements by the Israeli government. But a number of other settlements have been formed in the West Bank by the militant Jewish group, Gush Emunim or Faith Bloc. There have been violent demonstrations this year by Arabs who oppose Israel's presence in the West Bank. Israeli security forces stood by no Sunday but there were no disturbances.
