- Story Text: Israeli Arabs protest the killing of Sheikh Ahmed
Yassin.
Shouting "revenge, revenge" several thousand Israeli
Arabs took to the streets of Nazareth on Tuesday (March 23) to mourn
assassinated Hamas leader Ahmed Yassin.
The protest, organised by Israeli Arab movements ranging from Islamic
fundamentalists to supporters of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's Fatah
faction, was part of a day of mourning in Arab towns and villages in the
Jewish state.
Israel killed Yassin in a helicopter missile strike in Gaza on Monday
(March 22), provoking rage across the Arab world and vows of revenge from
Hamas, which has killed hundreds of Israelis in suicide bombings.
Police kept their distance from the demonstration in Nazareth, the
largest Arab town in Israel. Protesters waved black and Islamic flags and held
aloft posters of Yassin and a wheelchair in tribute to the paralysed
cleric.
Arabs make up about 20 percent of the population in Israel and have
long complained of discrimination in the allocation of government funds to
their towns and schools and permits for building homes on state-owned
land.
Since police killed 13 Israeli Arabs during stone-throwing protests at
the start of the Palestinian uprising, the community has largely remained on
the sidelines of the revolt.
