  • Story Text: Israeli forces clash with protesters at West Bank
    barrier construction site.



    Scuffles erupted between Israeli troops and peace
    activists on Monday (September 27) during a protest against
    the Israeli West Bank barrier near the Palestinian village
    of Beit Awa.

    Hundreds of foreign peace activists and Palestinian
    villagers demonstrated near the controversial barrier being
    erected near the West Bank city of Hebron.

    Israeli troops scuffled with the villagers before
    firing tear gas and dispersing the crowd.

    Israel says it needs the controversial barrier to
    prevent Palestinians from carrying out attacks in its
    cities.

    Two Palestinian suicide bombers infiltrated the Israeli
    city of Beer Sheba near Hebron earlier this month, where
    the barrier has not yet been erected, killing 16 Israelis
    in simultaneous attacks.

    Palestinians say the barrier annexes land they seek for
    a future state.

    The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in Hague
    announced in a non-binding declaration earlier this year
    that the barrier is illegal.
