- Story Text: Israeli foreign minister Silvan Shalon discusses
Middle East peace process with Egyptian president Hosni
Mubarak.
Israeli Foreign Minister, Silvan Shalom met on
Thursday (March 11) with President Hosni Mubarak, who
criticised the Gaza pullout plan to a French newspaper as a
potential "trap" for his country, which borders on the
Palestinian area.
In an apparent bid to please Washington ahead of
Thursday's talks, a political source said on Wednesday
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon had issued instructions
for a big cut of 170 km (110 miles) from the planned 720 km
(450 mile) route of Israel's West Bank barrier.
After the meeting, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed
Maher said president Mubarak is willing to cooperate to
implement the road map to peace.
In his first visit to Egypt, Shalom said he was encouraged
about the role Egypt can play to help bring
peace to the Middle East.
"This meeting showed me that there is a new time in our
relations and we should do everything we can in order to
strengthen our relations. I believe that Egypt as the
leader of the Arab world should play a key role in our
effortts to have better understanding here in our region
between Israel and the Arab world".
Shalom said that Mubarak had been informed about the
planned meeting between Israel Prime Minister Ariel Sharon
and Palestinian counterpart Ahmed Qurie next week.
In Ramallah, West Bank, Palestinian President Yasser
Arafat said on Thursday (March 11) he would welcome
Israel's planned pullout from the Gaza Strip but only as a
step towards a full withdrawal from occupied Palestinian
areas.
Arafat told Palestinian lawmakers any Israeli
withdrawal should be coordinated through talks with the
Palestinian Authority and should be within the framework of
a U.S.-backed "road map" to peace. The plan has been
