- Story Text: Scuffles between Israeli Army and West Bank settlers
as Sharon meets Bush in Washington.
Scuffles erupted between Israeli soldiers and Jewish
settlers near the West Bank city of Hebron on Wednesday
(April 14) only hours before Israeli Prime Minister Ariel
Sharon met with U.S. President George W. Bush in Washington.
The Hazon David outpost was dismantled after the
Supreme Court lifted an injuction to prevent its removal.
The outpost is the first of a handful slated for removal.
U.S. President George W. Bush's assurance to Israel on
Wednesday that it could retain some West Bank land claimed
by Palestinians endangers the future of the entire region,
a senior Palestinian official said.
Bush's statement at a White House news conference with
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon signalled a shift in
U.S. policy that could have major implications for the
future of Middle East peace negotiations.
Bush cited "new realities on the ground" for the change
in policy, including already existing major Israeli
population centres on the West Bank. Around 230,000 Jews
have settled in the West Bank since Israel occupied it in a
1967 war.
Bush also seemed to negate any claimed right of return
for Palestinian refugees to what is now Israel. He said a
solution should be found "through the establishment of a
Palestinian state and settling of Palestinian refugees
there rather than in Israel."
Sharon also wants to evacuate all 7,500 settlers from
the Gaza Strip, a plan Bush called "historic and
courageous". He urged all parties to choose this moment to
help "put an end to one of the world's longest running
conflicts".
