- Story Text: Israel's third President, Zalman Shazar was buried in the National Cemetery on Mount Herzl on Monday (October 7). He died on Saturday aged 84. Mr. Shazah was President from 1963 to 1973.
Thousands of Israelis filed past the bier as it lay in state in the large plaza of Jerusalem's convention centre. Many thousands more lined one of the main boulevards as the funeral cortege moved from the centre to Mount Herzl on the city's outskirts.
In accordance with Mr. Shazar's wishes only brief ceremonies were held at the plaza and at the graveside. He was buried in the Presidential plot near the grave of Israel's second President, Yitzhak Ben-Zvi. The country's first President, Dr. Haim Weizmann is interred near his former home in Rehovot.
All of Israel's leaders attended the ceremonies. They include President Ephraim Katzir, who succeeded Mr. Shazar to the largely ceremonial post last year.
SYNOPSIS: Former Prime Minister Golda Meir and current Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin were among the mourners at the grave side.
Mr. Shazar was President from 1963 to 1973. He often said one of his great hopes was to see Israel reach some sort of peace with neighbouring Arab countries. His dream was not realised....in fact he died on the first anniversary of the outbreak of the October War.
