- Story Text: Israelis celebrate annual love parade.
Over 100,000 Israelis showed their love on Friday
(October 22, 2004) as they danced in the streets of the coastal
city of Tel Aviv to mark the city's seventh annual love
parade.
The parade, originally scheduled on October 8, was
postponed due to bombings in Egypt earlier this month that
killed 21 people, including 13 Israeli tourists.
Israeli youngsters, some wearing skimpy clothing and
bikinis, danced on top of colourfully decorated floats that
drove along the beachfront promenade overlooking the
Mediterranean Ocean.
Israeli police tightened security and blocked roads
leading to the parade.
Alerts of attacks by militants have increased after
Israel's killing of a top Hamas leader and ahead of a key
parliamentary vote on Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's Gaza
pullout plan.
But Israeli youngsters put aside fears for the day to
enjoy the day.
"We came to celebrate the love like the real festival
in Rio de Janeiro, you know? To celebrate love but not in
jeans, right now we (wear) nothing, the real true love
comes from the inside, so we are here to celebrate our love
freely, with no jeans, nothing," said Tel Aviv resident Avi
Cohen.
The snazzy love-fest, which took place under the slogan
"Love Wins" and is considered to be one of the world's
biggest youth events in the world, ended in a huge party
that is expected to last until Saturday evening.
