  • Story Text: Clashes have erupted between Israeli soldiers and
    Palestinian protesters near the West Bank city of Ramallah.



    The violence came after Israel on Friday (August 17), said
    it was on high alert for suicide bombings by the Muslim militant
    groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad, following a week of violence.

    The violence escalated after a suicide bomber killed 15
    Israelis and himself and injured over 70 in an attack on a
    Jerusalem restaurant last Thursday (August 9).

    Israel responded by seizing Palestinian offices in and
    around Jerusalem and briefly sending tanks into the West Bank
    town of Jenin.

    Israels takeover of Orient House, a symbol of Palestinian
    aspirations to an independent state, only increased tension.

    Earlier on Friday, Israeli police detained three
    right-wing Israeli demonstrators near the building during a
    small protest in support of the takeover.

    Following Friday Muslim prayers, residents of the West Bank city
    of Ramallah held a protest march and later threw stones
    at an Israeli military checkpoint, leading to a short exchange
    of fire between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian gunmen.

    The protest came after Israeli security forces prevented
    Palestinians under the age of 40 from praying at Al Aqsa
    mosque inside Jerusalem's Old City.
