- Story Text: Israeli troops clash with protesters at
controversial barrier building site.
Israeli troops on Wednesday (December 31) shot and
wounded at least 10 Palestinians and one Israeli involved
in a protest at a construction site for Israel's
controversial barrier in the West Bank.
Military sources said one border policeman was lightly
wounded after protesters began throwing stones and
interrupting construction work on the barrier. They said
soldiers used "non-lethal means" to disperse the protesters
and did not use live ammunition.
Israeli soldiers fired towards around 500 Palestinian,
Israeli and foreign protesters near bulldozers turning over
ground for an extension of the barrier.
The incident, outside the Palestinian village of Budrus
near Ramallah, was the second time in five days that the
army opened fire at demonstrators gathered by the barrier.
On December 26, troops shot and wounded a young Israeli and
an American with live fire.
Palestinian medics said 20 Palestinians were hit by
rubber bullets and taken to hospital while an Israeli woman
was slightly wounded in the leg.
Palestinians say Israel's vast barrier grabs land from
West Bank territory they see as part of a future state.
Israel says the barrier is needed to keep out suicide
bombers.
Hundreds of Palestinians marched through the streets of
Gaza city on Wednesday (December 31) to mark the 39th
anniversary of the founding of Palestinian President Yasser
Arafat's Fatah movement.
Hundreds marched, waving flags of the Fatah movement -
the dominant party in the Palestinian parliament - and
portraits of Arafat.
The march came as persistent violence threatened the
U.S.-backed road map to Palestinian statehood in the West
Bank and the Gaza Strip.
Late on Tuesday (December 30) Palestinians vowed
revenge after Israel botched a bid to kill a militant
leader with a missile strike, wounding 10 passers-by.
The Gaza attack seemed to settle what Israeli media
reports have described as a debate within the security
forces over targeting Hamas again following the collapse
earlier this month
of Egyptian-sponsored talks to coax militants into a truce.
Israel has not carried out helicopter attacks against
the Islamic group since October 20, when members of its Izz
el-Qassem brigade were killed in their car in Gaza City.
