  • Story Text: For residents and army patrols in northern Israel along the border with Lebanon, there is no such thing as relaxation. Although the most recent successful incursion by Palestinian guerrillas has come from Syria in the Golan Heights, residents on the Lebanese border believe it could happen as easily there if it were not for the intense security.

    But even with the close watch kept on the area, attacks occur. On 20 November Israeli forces reported that they were fired on from 300 yards inside Lebanon. They say they returned the fire and there were no casualties. Still, it's a reminder that a threat hangs over the area.

    Many sections of Lebanon near the border have been virtually taken over by guerrillas. Israel has frequently made aerial attacks on the bases, sometimes even landing commandoes by helicopter.

    In the border kibbutz, students are schooled not only in the traditional subjects, but in evacuation techniques. Children have frequently been the victims of guerrillas.

    Women are also expected to contribute to the defence effort and are trained in gunhandling and marksmanship.

    Meantime, the Israel Defence Forces continue their vigilance, patrolling along a security fence which worms along the entire length of the border.

    Sirens are spaced along the fence and when a breakthrough is reported, they wail the warning and residents react with safety precautions as the settlements are lit up with flares.

    The caution taken by the Israelis along the Lebanese border has made them critical of what they consider the more lax approach taken in the vicinity of the Golan Heights where the most recent attack occurred on 20 November.

    Three Israeli students were gunned down and one wounded in an attack by some guerrillas who managed to escape undetected.

    The area is patrolled by the United National Emergency Force and the Israeli Army accused them of having looser security than that imposed by the Israelis along the border with Lebanon, where the entire security burden is borne by Israel.
