- Story Text: Close two thousand demonstrators have gathered outside
the Israeli embassy in Athens to show solidarity with the
Palestinian people and call an end to the bloodshed, following
the latest events in the Middle East.
Banging drums and chanting "Bush, Sharon, you are
murderers", demonstrators circled the Israeli embassy in
central Athens on Friday (March 29, 2002).
Greek anti-globalisation protesters, Palestinians living
in Athens, students and members of peace groups gathered to
call for an end to the bloodshed in the Middle East.
Demonstrators demanded the end of the occupation of
Palestinian territories by Israeli troops and for the
formation of an independent Palestinian state.
The demonstrators, including children, chanted 'Intifada'
and 'Freedom for Palestine', wearing Palestinian headress and
carrying pictures of Arafat and banners condemning Israeli
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
Riot police blocked the entrance to the Israeli embassy
with police vans and kept the protesters at a distance from
the building.
"Something should be done to help my people," one
Palestinian living in Athens said. "It's really a disaster
what is happening there and this is the minimum we can do."
