- Story Text: Sirens have wailed in Jerusalem and the West Bank as
people stood still for two minutes in memory of the six
million Jews killed by Nazi Germany nearly 60 years ago.
Parts of Jerusalem and the West Bank came to a standstill
for two minutes on Thursday (April 19) as Jews in these areas
joined Israel in commemorating Holocaust Remembrance Day.
The sirens blared through the region at 10 a.m. (0700 GMT).
In Jerusalem, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and
President Moshe Katzav arrived at the Yad Vashem Holocaust
memorial. Following the two minutes of silence and personal
prayer, they laid wreaths at the eternal flame.
Israeli soldiers closed off the Al-Ram checkpoint into
Jerusalem as the sirens rang out to mark Holocaust day. Cars
stopped on the road and Israelis hung their heads in memory of
the six million Jews who perished at the hands of the Nazis
and their collaborators during World War 2.
And in the West Bank town of Hebron, Jewish settlers
stopped their activities and stood motionless as the sirens
rang out.
Similar air raid sirens wail two other times each year,
both in commemoration of the Jewish state's fallen soldiers.
Israelis also commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day in
special radio and television broadcasts.
After months of a Palestinian uprising, cabinet minister
Ephraim Sneh told Israel Radio it was difficult to deal with
"the memory of the Holocaust and (the fact that) today, 60
years later, we are fighting for our lives".
At least 381 Palestinians, 71 Israelis and 13 Israeli
Arabs have been killed in the nearly seven months of the
Palestinian revolt against Israel's almost 34-year-old
occupation of West Bank and Gaza Strip lands.
