- Story Text: Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has commented on
his upcoming visit to Washington for talks with U.S. President
George W. Bush. The talks are likely to focus on Iran and Iraq
as well as on the continuing Israeli-Palestinian bloodshed.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon met with President
Katzav in Jerusalem on Tuesday (February 5) ahead of Sharon's
visit to Washington to meet with U.S. President George W.
Bush.
Talks between Sharon and Bush are due to address the issue
of Iran as well as concerns over Iraq and the 17-month-old
Palestinian uprising against occupation which erupted after
peace talks stalled.
"I'm ready to compromise for genuine, for durable, for
true peace. We are not with the Palestinians talking an hour
about the political solution with the Palestinians. We talk
only about one thing, that is full cessation of violence and
terror," Sharon told reporters.
As violence continues, Israel and the United States
continue to urge Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, confined
to his West Bank headquarters by Israeli tanks, to do more to
rein in militants.
