- Story Text: Israeli prime minster Ariel Sharon has met with
Icelands foreign minister Halldor Asgrimsson after the latter
met with his counterpart Shimon Peres in Tel-Aviv earlier in
the day.
Meanwhile, German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer has met
with Israeli foreign minister Shimon Peres after meeting
earlier with Israeli defence minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer.
Iceland's Foreign Minister Halldor Asgrimsson, who
arrived for meetings met with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel
Sharon on Wednesday (May 29) in Jerusalem after meeting with
his counterpart Shimon Peres in Tel-Aviv earlier in the day.
Asgrimsson, Fischer and other diplomats have arrived in
the region in an attempt to revive peace talks after the
deaths of at least 1,375 Palestinians and 486 Israelis in 20
months of violence.
At the same time, German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer
met with Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres. Earlier he had
met with Israeli defence minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer.
Fischer said the idea of a Middle East conference this
summer, organized by the United States, Russia, the United
Nations and the European Union is "an excellent idea and it
should be carefully worked out, we should bring these ideas
forward."
Meantime, in Bethlehem, the Israeli military continued to
encircle the church of the Nativity. Israeli troops raided
West Bank villages near Bethlehem overnight and re-entered the
city of Qalqilya.
The army said it had detained 15 people in the Bethlehem area.
The Israeli army escorted media around the main square,
near the church of the Nativity. Military trucks, jeeps and
APCs were present in the radios of the church. One Israeli
sniper was seen positioned on a window aiming his riffle
towards manger square.
