- Story Text: Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has said at a
ceremony in Jerusalem that Jerusalem will be Israel's united
and undivided capital forever.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said on Wednesday
(December 19) said that Jerusalem will be Israel's united and
undivided capital forever.
"(Jerusalem) is the capital of Jewish people since over
3,000 years, the united and undivded capital and the
Temple Mount, the holiest site for the Jewish people (it
is) the capital of Israel forever and ever", Sharon said at a
ceremony opening the new central bus station in Jerusalem.
Israel captured Arab East Jerusalem in the 1967 Middle
East war and annexed it in a move not recognised
internationally. It regards all of Jerusalem as its capital,
but Palestinians want East Jerusalem to be the capital of a
future state.
At least 784 Palestinians and 233 Israelis have been
killed since a Palestinian uprising against occupation erupted
in September 2000 after peace talks stalled.
