Palestinians march in funerals
Palestinian President Yasser Arafat condemned the
ongoing bloodshed in the southern Gaza Strip on Thursday
(May 13) where some 10,000 Palestinians marched in funerals
for Palestinians killed in earlier air strikes and ground
raids.
In the West bank city of Ramallah, Arafat who on
Wednesday (May 12) called on Palestinian militants to hand
over the body parts of six dead Israeli soldiers killed in
an ambush in Zeitoun neighbourhood in Gaza, called the
ongoing military operations "ugly crimes."
"They have moved their crimes from Zeitoun in the Gaza
city to Rafah, these are ugly crimes which have caused tens
of martyrs and injuries and destruction," Arafat said.
"Tell me, where else in this world would you witness this.
I am calling upon the whole world to condemn these Israeli
criminal acts against our Palestinian people."
In the Rafah refugee camp in the southern Gaza Strip,
Palestinians marched in the funerals of eight men killed by
Israeli forces earlier in Thursday (May 13). Activists
belonging to all Palestinian factions, including Islamic
Jihad and Hamas, attended with masked gunmen shooting
assault rifles in the air while others vowed revenge.
Israel killed 12 Palestinians in southern Gaza on
Thursday (May 13) after back-to-back ambushes claimed the
lives of 11 of its soldiers in the worst blow to the army
in two years.
Witnesses said 11 Palestinians, four of them militants,
were killed in helicopter missiles strikes in Rafah refugee
camp, near the area where militants blew up an
explosives-packed troop carrier on Wednesday (May 12). Five
soldiers in the vehicle were killed.
Israeli troops later shot dead a 19-year-old
Palestinian during a push into Rafah, where 10 homes were
demolished witnesses and medics said. Israel often raids
the camp to uncover tunnels used to smuggle weapons from
Egypt.
