- Story Text: One Palestinian has been killed and another two
arrested by Israeli soldiers in the West Bank city of Nablus,
after Israeli soldiers entered the Palestinian city and surrounded
a house where three suspected Hamas militants where hiding.
An Israeli soldier was also killed by Plaestinian gunmen
in the action in Nablus.
Israeli forces killed a Palestinian gunman and took
two other militants into custody on Tuesday (April 15) after
surrounding an apartment building where the three wanted men
were holed up, witnesses said. An Isreali soldier was also
killed by Palestinian gunmen in the action in Nablus.
Several apartments were damaged in exchanges of fire
during the operation in the West Bank city of Nablus.
The gunman killed in Nablus was identified by Palestinian
security sources as a member of the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades,
affiliated with President Yasser Arafat's Fatah faction. His
body was found on the roof of the building after the clash.
One of the men detained in the raid belonged to the
militant Islamic group Hamas. The other Palestinian taken into
custody was also wanted by Israel, the security sources said,
but his affiliation was not immediately known.
An Israeli army spokesman confirmed that troops had
carried out an operation in Nablus but gave no details.
In the West Bank city of Hebron, the army demolished the
family home of a suspected Hamas militant. An army statement
said he had tried to carry out an attack in the nearby Jewish
settlement of Kiryat Arba on April 5.
At least 1,992 Palestinians and 729 Israelis have been
killed since the uprising began in September 2000.
