- Story Text: Israel transports prisoners from Demon prison in the
Israeli city of Haifa slated for release later today.
Prisoners Tuesday (August 12, 2003) in what it calls an
ongoing gesture to bolster U.S backed peace plan.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has made it a top
priority to secure the release of Palestinian prisoners
from Israeli jails.
There have been several Israeli prison releases in the past
few months but some 6,000 Palestinians remain in Isreali
prisons.
Many are alledged to have been directly involved in
violence against Israelis and Israel has stressed it has no
intention of releasing such prisoners.
Isreal says it will release more prisoners if peace
talks continue, but says it is not obligated to do so.
Palestinians seek amnesty for all 6,000 prisoners in
Israeli jails, calling it a test of Israel's commitment to
peace moves.
Right-wing Israelis opposed the release, fearing the
released men will turn to violence, although none was
involved in attacks during the uprising in the West Bank
and Gaza Strip.
