- Story Text: Israel has started delivery of 220,000 vaccination kits
against foot-and-mouth disease to the Palestinians. The two
sides charged each other with cynically manipulating the issue
for political purposes.
The Palestinian Authority said it had discovered four
cases of the disease in one outbreak of foot-and-mouth near
the West Bank Palestinian self-ruled town of Ramallah but that
an Israeli blockade was preventing it from tackling the
situation.
Israeli officials warned Palestinians were manipulating
the matter to draw attention to the Israeli blockade in the
absence of laboratory testing confirming their veterinary
assessments.
The highly contagious disease is common in the Middle
East, and the Palestinian Authority has made no link with the
outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Britain and France.
On Friday, Palestinian officials said the disease was
found in cows and goats.
Israel said on Friday it would relax the clampdown it
imposed on Palestinian areas since the start of a nearly
six-month long confrontation.
The United States and Europe have pressured Israel to lift
the closure which the Palestinians brand as collective
punishment crippling their economy. Israel calls the blockades
a security measure necessary to prevent terror attacks against
its citizens.
Israel transferred the vaccines to the Palestinian
Authority at the Tulkarm checkpoint on Sunday and had
requested samples for testing from cattle believed to be
infected with the disease.
