  • Story Text: Israeli ambassador to Ethiopia believed to have left
    hospital in ambulance after being treated following
    shooting at his home in Addis Ababa.


    Israel's ambassador to Ethiopia was found shot and
    wounded at his Addis Ababa home but the Israeli Foreign
    Ministry said it was not believed to be a "terrorist
    incident".

    An Israeli security source said the shooting on Tuesday
    (March 29), which left Ambassador Doron Grossman in
    critical condition, "appeared to have a personal
    background".

    Israeli government sources said a security guard found
    Grossman in his room at the Addis Ababa Hilton Hotel with
    the envoy's gun nearby.

    A doctor involved in the ambassador's treatment at
    Addis Ababa's Hayat hospital said Grossman had been in
    intensive care, in a room guarded by security officers.

    A Reuters witness at the hospital said he saw an
    ambulance accompanied by Israeli and Ethiopian Foreign
    Ministry officials leave the hospital on Wednesday (March
    30) evening.

    The Ethiopian government was expected to make a
    statement through state-run media late on Wednesday.

    Grossman, 48, had served in the post since 2002 and was
    due to leave shortly to become Israel's ambassador in South
    Africa.

    Tens of thousands of Ethiopian Jews have immigrated to
    Israel from the Horn of Africa nation since the 1980s.
