- Story Text: Israeli forces have imposed a curfew on the West Bank
city of Hebron and rounded up suspected Palestinian militants.
Several people were injured when troops threw stun grenades
into a crowded market.
Squads of Israeli soldiers in armoured vehicles combed
the streets of Hebron overnight and early on Saturday (August
16-17, 2002) as they mounted a sweep for suspected militants.
The soldiers arrested more than 100 Palestinian men in the
roundup and held them at a military base inside city, divided
between Israeli and Palestinian control.
Soldiers in the city centre sent people scurrying out of
a crowded market and injured several people when they threw
stun grenades into the crowd.
Israeli troops have recently increased their presence in
the city, taking over more Palestinian homes for use as
military positions and setting up more checkpoints inside the
Palestinian-controlled section of the city.
Soldiers on Saturday arrested a renowned militant from the
al-Aqsa Brigades, Sodky al-Zollo, known locally as Hebron's
"Bin Laden".
Doctors at Hebron's Al-ahli Hospital said at least five
Palestinians had been treaed for injuries, most of them
sustained from shrapnel.
