- Story Text: Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has convened his
cabinet during a relative lull in Palestinian-Israeli violence
that has lasted since Christmas Day.
The cabinet convened on Sunday (December 30) amid calls
for the return of United States (U.S.) envoy General Anthony
Zinni.
The Palestinian Authority called for the return of the
retired Marine Corps general in its cabinet session Friday
(December 28), saying they are ready to show him what has been
done to reduce violence.
The Israeli media also reported a sharp decrease in
incidents of Palestinian violence against Israel.
The decline in violence began shortly after a speech on
Palestinian TV by Palestinian President Yasser Arafat on
December 16 calling for an end to violence against Israelis.
But Sharon has demanded a complete halt to attacks and
attempted attacks for seven days as a precondition for
re-starting negotiations.
The Palestinians say the standard is impossible to
achieve.
United States Mideast envoy retired Marine Corps General
Anthony Zinni, who left Israel on December 14 amid spiralling
violence by Palestinians and Israeli retaliatory attacks, is
expected to return to the region soon.
The United States said he would return only if
Palestinians took more concrete steps to end attacks by
militants and if Israelis eased restrictions on Palestinians.
