  • Story Text: The renewed United Nations Security Council discussions on the troubled Middle East heard an appeal on Friday (20 July) from Egypt for support against Israeli occupation.

    Addressing the council after a five-week recess in its debate, Dr. Mohammed El-Zayyat, Egypt's Foreign Minister asked that it declare Israel's policies "outside the law".

    He asked if the Egyptian resistance was to be supported by the principle of collective security or whether Egypt had to do it alone--warning that Egypt would use its own methods. "We will not come crawling on our bellies, no mater how many (Israeli) Phantoms (jets) not matter how many vetoes" said Dr. El-Zayyat, alluding to the United States support of the Israeli position.

    Replying immediately to Dr. El-Zayyat, Israeli Ambassador Yosef Tekoah urged Egypt to enter negotiations, and said Israel was always ready to enter into a meaningful negotiation toward peace.

    Mr. Tekoah accused the Egyptian and Arab governments of trying to impose their views on Israel, with a total disregard of Israel's rights and vital interests.

    Mr. Yakov Malik, the delegate of the Soviet Union, said the council should adopt a firm position for the withdrawal of Israeli troops from all occupied territories. He said there had been a clear and categoric condemnation of Israel by council members, not an "autocratic majority" suggested by Israel, but a clear statement of "international law".
