  • Story Text: Israel troops clashed with Palestinians in Jenin when
    they tried to impose a curfew in the West Bank town. Several
    people were wounded in the violence, during which Palestinian
    gunmen exchanged fire with the soldiers.



    New clashes broke out in Jenin on Monday (September 2)
    when Israeli tanks tried to impose a curfew in the west bank
    city. The residents of the city fled from the streets away
    from the tear gas cartridges shot by Israeli forces.

    Many Palestinians fled the scene, while others clashed
    with the Israeli tanks by throwing large stones from the roofs
    of the houses, and gunshots were heard when armed Palestinians
    fired at the tanks.

    The Israeli army reoccupied the West Bank in June after
    a spate of suicide bombings. Curfews were imposed in all West
    Bank cities which paralysed normal economical and social life
    in the region.

    Under the recent Gaza-Bethlehem-First agreement, Israeli
    troops were pulled out of Bethlehem a week ago, but there was
    no further withdrawals and a meeting concerning the
    implementation of the agreement was cancelled twice last week.

    Despite efforts by U.S. and European envoys to the region to
    revive the negotiation process, no progress was made.
