- Story Text: Israeli's shoot dead Palestinian in Bethlehem.
Israeli soldiers shot a Palestinian man Wednesday
(August 27, 2003) during a confrontation outside the tomb of the
biblical matriarch Rachel near Bethlehem, Israeli security
sources and witnesses said.
The sources said soldiers at a checkpoint opened fire
on the man as he approached them wielding a knife. His
condition was unclear.
Israeli radio stations said the Palestinian man died at
the scene of his injuries as he was being treated by army
medics.
A Palestinian medic said soldiers prevented his
ambulance from reaching the scene of the shooting.
Minutes before the incident Palestinian witnesses
reported protests at the site, a frequent flashpoint of
Israeli-Palestinian violence during the 34-month uprising
for statehood, against Jewish visitors to the tomb.
Witnesses at nearby Al Aida refugee camp confirmed that
soldiers opened fire in the direction of the camp, hitting
one Palestinian.
Rachel's Tomb, just outside of Bethlehem, is the
believed burial spot of the biblical matriarch, Rachel.
Earlier mourners chanting anti-Israeli slogans marched
through Gaza for the funeral of a bystander, killed in a
botched Israeli military strike against Hamas gunmen.
Israel had aimed at killing Hamas militants by firing a
salvo of missiles on their car in Jabalya refugee camp on
Tuesday (August 26). One elderly bystander was killed, 20
people were wounded, including 6 children and the two Hamas
gunmen walked away unharmed.
The strike was the third in less than a week. It shows
Israel's resolve to keep up attacks on Hamas after a
suicide bombing on a Jerusalem bus killed 21 people,
including six children, dealing a heavy blow to a ceasefire
key to a U.S.-led peace plan.
