- Story Text: Israeli PM Ariel Sharon convenes cabinet meeting
days after fresh violence threatens fragile month-old
ceasefire.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon held his weekly
cabinet meeting in Jerusalem on Monday (August 10)
follow
ing fresh violence in which two Hamas militants and
one Israeli soldier were killed in a West Bank raid.
The violence rocked a fragile month-old ceasefire
called by Palestinian militant groups and drew vows of
revenge by Hamas leaders as well as condemnation by the
Palestinian President.
Israeli-Palestinian violence has subsided dramatically
since the truce began 33 months into a Palestinian uprising
against Israel in pursuit of statehood in the West Bank and
Gaza Strip.
Meanwhile, Israel lodged a complaint with the United
Nations after Hizbollah guerrillas fired anti-tank rockets
and mortar bombs at an Israeli army post on the
Israel-Lebanese border for the first time in seven months.
Hizbollah, which is sponsored by Iran and Syria and
controls southern Lebanon, warned more attacks could be on
the way.
"As far as the Northern border is concerned, as you
well know, Israel has evacuated Lebanon long ago, fully
recognised by the United Nations, as a fulfilment of
Resolution 425 of the United Nations and there is no reason
for Hizbollah to rely on any former violation of the
sovereignty of Lebanon other than just an attempt to incite
confrontation and to encourage terror in the Northern part
of the country and this is intolerable and unacceptable.
Israel will find ways to respond to this in effective
ways," said Ehud Olmert, Minister of Industry and Trade.
Israeli troops withdrew from south Lebanon in 2000,
ending a 22-year occupation under daily Hizbollah assault.
But its soldiers remained in one small border area known as
Shebaa Farms, which Hizbollah regards as Lebanese territory.
The United Nations, which monitored the Israeli
withdrawal, says it is Israeli-occupied Syrian land and
subject to peace talks with Damascus.
