- Story Text: Yossi Sarid, head of Israel's Meretz party has said
that in order to reach a final peace agreement between
Israelis and Palestinians, Israel must withdraw to the 1967
borders, dismantle all Jewish settlements and divide Jerusalem
into two capitals.
Yossi Sarid, head of Israel's Meretz party was speaking
at a news conference in Berlin on Tuesday (February 5) along
with Palestinian minister for culture and information, Yasser
Abed Rabbo.
"When a final agreement will be reached there is no
question that Israel will have to withdraw to the 1967 borders
with minor, mutually agreed modifications," Sarid said.
Sarid and Abed Rabbo are heading an Israeli-Palestinian
coalition promoting peace in the Middle East.
Sarid urged the United States to send their special envoy
to the Middle East, Anthony Zinni, back to the region soon.
"Probably the administration meant to punish Yasser Arafat
by not sending back General Zinni. But as we collectively
define it it is a collective punishment, it's not Yasser
Arafat being punished," Sarid said of the lack of dialogue
between the two sides.
He added that in his view "It's up to the Americans, the
only superpower on earth, to exercise their capabilities in a
more efficient and responsible way."
Sarid, Rabbo, former Israeli justice minister Yossi
Beilin, Yuli Tamir, director of the Yitzhak Rabin Centre, and
Ghassan Khatib, director of Jerusalem's centre for media and
communication are currently in Germany at the invitation of
the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation, an organisation close to
German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's Social Democrats.
German foreign minister Joschka Fischer is planning
another trip to the Middle East later this month, according to
Berlin's foreign ministry.
