  • Story Text: Jerusalem was once again the centre of the current Middle East negotiations on Friday as United States Secretary of State, Dr. Henry Kissinger, returned to meet Israeli leaders reportedly with compromise proposals for an interim settlement with Egypt.

    Dr. Kissinger was greeted by his wife Nancy when he flew in to Ben Gurion International Airport from Aswan on the 12th day of his Middle East peace mission.

    The Secretary of State has been seeking to achieve a further troop disengagement in the Sinai Desert based on an Israeli withdrawal and an Egyptian agreement to suspend hostilities.

    After lengthy discussions with the leaders of both countries, the negotiations were believed to have reached a critical stage.

    There were reports that Dr. Kissinger was striving for the acceptance of a compromise formula that would involve deep Israeli withdrawals in stages from occupied Sinai with United Nations forces moving into the vacated territory.

    After a two hour meeting, at which Dr. Kissinger briefed the Israeli negotiating team on the latest Egyptian position, it was agreed that talks should resume on Saturday (22 March) evening.

    Both the Israeli Defence Minister, Mr. Shimon Peres, and Dr. Kissinger agreed that the break would allow the parties to think over where they stood before the Secretary of State returned to Egypt.
