- Story Text: Clashes between the Israeli army and Palestinians have
erupted in the heart of the West Bank city of Ramallah.
A Reuters journalist covering the violence has been
wounded by a bullet in his shoulder.
Several people including a Reuters photographer were
wounded on Monday (August 26, 2002) during clashes between Israeli
soldiers and Palestinians in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
Ammar Awad, a freelance photographer who has worked with
Reuters for 18 months, was shot by Israeli soldiers firing
rubber bullets at stone-throwing children in central Ramallah.
Three teenage stone-throwers were also hit by rubber
bullets. They were brought along with Awad to a Ramallah
hospital for treatment.
Awad said he was standing next to other reporters in his
flackjacket and photographing the clashes when he was shot.
His left shoulder was marked with a deep red circle,
which Awad said doctors were examining for piercing.
Awad, a resident of East Jerusalem, holds an Israeli
identity card and has worked for Reuters for 18 months.
The Israeli army did not immediately comment.
