  • Story Text: Israelis march in costume parade for Jewish holiday
    of Purim under the watchful eye of heavy security.



    Some 150,000 Israelis attended a street parade in
    the Israeli city of Holon on Sunday (March 7, 2004) as Jews
    celebrated the costume holiday of Purim.

    Crowds of spectators watched as thousands of Israeli
    youths dressed in colourful costumes paraded through the
    streets of Holon. Participants danced in choreographed groups
    and on festival floats as the parade made its way through Holon
    streets.

    Despite the festivities the heavy security presence
    served as a reminder of the ongoing threat of violence in
    the region.

    Israeli security forces have been on heightened alert
    for Palestinian militant attacks since Friday (March 5).

    The army sealed off the West Bank and Gaza Strip for the
    long weekend -- a measure taken during most Jewish holidays.

    Armoured Israeli forces raided two Gaza refugee camps
    on Sunday, igniting gunbattles that killed 14 Palestinians
    after militants staged an audacious attack on Israeli
    soldiers at Gaza's border.
