- Story Text: Hundreds of Israelis have attended the funerals of two
Israelis killed in a Palestinian bombing in Jerusalem that
took at least seven lives and wounded some 20 other people on
Sunday.
Mourners gathered around the graves at a cemetery in
Jerusalem to pay their respects to those killed in the attack,
one of two suicide bombings that rocked the city on Sunday
(May 18, 2003) morning. The attack happened only hours after the
first high-level talks in months were held between Israeli
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Abu Mazen, his Palestinian
counterpart.
A Palestinian suicide bomber disguised as a religious Jew
killed seven people on a Jerusalem bus, prompting Israeli
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to put off a White House trip to
discuss a U.S.-backed peace plan.
Another suicide bomber struck soon afterwards at a nearby
roadblock, but killed only himself, taking the overall death
toll to nine in a new spasm of bloodshed just hours after the
highest-level Israeli-Palestinian talks for over two years.
Wearing a skullcap and prayer shawl, the first attacker
blew himself up soon after boarding the bus. His bomb spewed
out ball bearings, and blood and body parts stained the inside
of the vehicle red. Police said seven people were killed and
20 hurt.
The Islamic militant group Hamas said on its website that
it carried out the attack in Jerusalem's French Hill district
on land occupied by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war.
Israel put ultimate blame for the attacks on Palestinian
President Yasser Arafat, whom Washington is boycotting as an
alleged orchestrator of violence. Arafat denies the charge.
