- Story Text: Israeli bulldozers have demolished three Palestinian
houses in Jeruslem as Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was
due in Washington for talks with U.S. President George W. Bush
likely to focus on Iran and Iraq as well as on
Israeli-Palestinian bloodshed.
Israeli bulldozers demolished three Palestinian houses
under construction in east Jerusalem on Wednesday (February
6). Israel says the houses were being constructed without
government's authorisation.
"This is the gift of Sharon to the American administration
- that he is going to continue his settlement policy, his
aggression, his military escalation, his policy of continuing
assassinations and this a very risky situation because the
American administration is receiving him in a couple of days
and this should be harmful to the peace process" said
Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's adviser, Nabil Abu
Rdainah.
Sharon was on Wednesday heading to Washington for talks
with the U.S. President likely to focus on their common
nemeses Iran and Iraq as well as the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict.
The meeting on Thursday (February 7) will be Sharon's
fourth White House visit in a year in office. In that time
Bush has not even once met Arafat, in whom he has expressed
disappointment over an alleged arms smuggling attempt.
Sharon has said he will urge Bush to sever ties with
Arafat, who has denied any involvement in the arms shipment
which Israel seized in the Red Sea last month and said came
from Iran.
"What we would like to get in this visit is an end to
terrorism and violence. Today, to our regret, Arafat has
become irrelevant and I would even say that his only relevancy
is his devotion to continue in the way of terror", said
Israeli government official Avi Pazner.
Israeli tanks have confined Arafat to his West Bank
headquarters since December, demanding he turn over militants
who killed an Israeli cabinet minister in October.
