- Story Text: Israeli troops have pulled out of Hebron following a
brief incursion into the West Bank city in what the Israeli
army said was an operation to strike at terrorist
infrastrucutre.
Between 30 and 40 armoured vehicles entered Hebron at
around 2 a.m. (2300 GMT) on Thursday morning (May 30) and
troops conducted house searches, witnesses said.
The army had no immediate comment, but military sources
described the incursion as a "targetted foray" during which
four wanted men were captured.
A Reuters cameraman said he saw the arrests of senior
Islamic Jihad militant Mohammed Sider and of a Hamas
counterpart at separate locations in the city.
Palestinian security sources said the Israeli army had
twice previously tried to kill Sider.
The Israeli army has carried out almost nightly
incursions into Palestinian West Bank towns and villages since
a major offensive in the West Bank last month, and has
arrested a number of suspects.
It says the raids are aimed at seizing Palestinian
militants linked to a resumption of suicide bombings.
At least 1,375 Palestinians and 486 Israelis have died in
a 20-month Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation.
