  • Story Text: Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has released a statement
    saying that Israel will 'fight terror at time and any way
    possible.'
    The statement was released at a news conference at
    Sharon's office in Jerusalem on Sunday (May 18, 2003) after his
    Cabinet held an emergency security meeting following the death
    of nine Israelis from two suicide bombings within the last 24
    hours.

    Sharon postponed his trip to the United States to meet
    U.S. President George W. Bush regarding the Middle East 'Road
    Map' in light of the bombings.

    "This trip will probably take place on a different
    date," Sharon said earlier in the day.

    The attack was one of two suicide bombings that rocked the
    city on Sunday morning hours after the first high-level talks
    in months were held between Israeli Prime Minister Ariel
    Sharon and Abu Mazen, his Palestinian counterpart.

    Sharon;s spokesman Arnon Perlman told journalists on
    Sunday evening:
    "The purpose of Palestinian terror and all of its
    organisation which operate within the Palestinian authorities
    and overseas, is to continue to murder citizens, women,
    children, babies and elderly, solely due to the fact they are
    Jewish and Israeli. The purpose of terrorists, those who aid
    them, assign them their tasks and fund them. is to bring about
    despair and loss of hope. This goal will not succeed. The
    state of Israel will continue to fight terror everwhere at any
    time and any way possible. The state of Israel will continue
    to operate, in order to prevent any intention to murder its
    citizens, until there is proof that there is someone on the
    other side who is capable of doing so."
