- Story Text: Airport and Israeli banks hit in four hour general
strike
An Israeli court has issued a last-minute injunction
barring the Histadrut labour federation from launching an
open-ended general strike that had threatened to paralyse
the whole economy.
But the court gave the Histadrut, which represents
hu
ndreds of thousands of public sector workers, permission
to hold a four-hour strike, throwing the country into
confusion over when
essential services would be disrupted.
Histadrut officials announced the federation's planned
strike had begun at 6 a.m. (0400 GMT) in protest at
government plans to lay off workers and reform pension
programmes. Workers at Tel Aviv's international airport
began striking at 8 a.m. (0600 GMT).
In West Jerusalem, clients arrived to find the banks
closed, though gas stations remained for the most part
open.
