- Story Text: Israeli soldiers pull out of key neighborhood in
Gaza.
Israeli soldiers on Monday (May 24) pulled out of a
key neighbourhood in a Gaza refugee camp after an
internationally condemned six-day siege to uncover weapons
tunnels in which 42 Palestinians died.
Residents of the Tel Sultan area of Rafah began
venturing out of their homes hours after Israeli Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon pledged to put a revised plan to
evacuate Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip to a cabinet
vote by next week.
An Israeli military source said the pullout was part
of a "new deployment" aimed to "ease conditions" and allow
residents to leave their homes to stock up on food, water
and medicine.
Israeli troops remained in at least one other Rafah
stronghold, known as the Brazil camp, where beseiged
residents reported a severe water shortage.
Television footage of Palestinian refugees picking
through the rubble of some 35 demolished homes in Rafah
sparked a world outcry and even sparked a row inside
Sharon's cabinet.
