- Story Text: Israel has seized a top Palestinian militant in the
West Bank town of Jenin.
Israeli soldiers captured a leader of the Islamic
Jihad militant group hiding underneath a car during a raid
on Wednesday (October 1) in a refugee camp near the West
Bank city of Jenin, witnesses said.
An Israeli military source confirmed that Sheikh Basaam
Sa'adi had been captured, but the army did not comment.
Palestinian witnesses said Sa'adi was a top leader of
Islamic Jihad in the West Bank and that he had been wanted
by Israel for two years.
The witnesses said soldiers backed by helicopters and
tanks raided a section of the refugee camp before dawn and
told residents to evacuate the area, as they carried out
house-to-house searches for suspected militants.
Sa'adi, 42, was found by sniffer dogs beneath a car
parked outside a mosque, the witnesses said. Three other
Palestinians were also arrested in Jenin, they said.
Islamic Jihad has carried out dozens of attacks that
have killed hundreds of Israeli during a three-year-old
Palestinian uprising for statehood.
In other Israeli military raids, troops seized several
suspected militants near the West Bank cities o Nablus,
Ramallah and Hebron, the army said. Witnesses said soldiers
blew up 12 homes and a tunnel used to smuggle weapons from
Egypt into the Gaza Strip.
