- Story Text: The Israeli army has showcased its locally developed
anti ballistic missile, named 'Arrow' and designed to
intercept missiles in space. The demonstration came as fears
of regional warfare grow in the shadow of an American threat
to launch a war on Iraq.
The Israeli airforce demonstrated on Thursday
(November 7, 2002) its 'Arrow' missile, a state-of-the-art
anti-missile battery built in the centre of the country to
fend off Iraqi attacks in the event of a U.S. assault on
Baghdad.
The Arrow-2 system, developed by Israel in conjunction
with its guardian ally the United States, was displayed in
Palmachim military base on Thursday (November 7) by the
Israeli airforce.
During the Gulf War, U.S. made 'Patriot' anti-missile
systems which were deployed near Israeli towns, intercepted
some of the Scud missiles which were launched by Iraq. But at
least 30 of the Iraqi surface-to-surface missiles got through,
killing one person and causing significant damage.
"The last year we come to a very huge capabilities in the
way that we building up our weapon systems, the arrow and the
Patriot. We are dealing with two layers which the Patriot is
the lower one and the arrow, which is very unique and the only
weapon system that is operational in the world can deal with
all type of threats that here in Israel we assess and evaluate
that we need to confront with," Israeli airforce brigadier
general Yair Dori told journalists at the Israeli Palmachim
airbase.
Arrow-2 missiles can fly at least 50 kilometres away from
their targets and intercept diverse missiles, including
explosive warheads, before it reaches Israel's airspace.
A radar called "green pine" situated in a balloon, which
has the ability to detect missiles from hundreds of kilometres
away, was also showcased by the Israeli airforces.
A possible U.S. attack on Iraq has heightened Israeli
concerns over a repeat of the 1991 Gulf War, when Iraqi Scud
missiles rained on the Jewish state.
Israel tested the Arrow missile seven times since 2000,
when it was ready for an operational launch. According to
senior Israeli military source, the tests were carried out
successfully.
