- Story Text: Dozens march in Gush Katif settlement to mourn two
killed Israelis.
Dozens of young Jewish settlers staged a march on
Sunday (July 24, 2005) to protest at the upcoming withdrawal from
the Gaza Strip.
They followed a route from the Kfar Darom settlement
towards the Kissufim crossing where two Israelis where
killed on Saturday night by Palestinian gunmen.
The protesters were only allowed to proceed after
lengthy discussions with the Israeli army who feared the
marchers, who wanted to gather at the exact site where Dov
and Rachel Kohl were gunned down, would have been put in
danger.
Initially the army refused to let the march go-ahead,
and settlers tried talking their way through.
"If you were there, instead of blocking us, if you were
there yesterday this couple would not have been murdered.
You should all do a soul searching," one woman told the
soldiers.
Eventually the protesters were allowed out of Kfar
Darom settlement and marched towards Kissufim crossing, the
main pathway between Israel and the Gaza Strip, under heavy
security.
Soldiers accompanied them. Tanks were also in position
along the route.
Demonstrators chanted slogans calling on Israeli Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon to cancel his plan to 'disengage'
from Palestinians by evacuating 21 settlements in Gaza
Strip and four in the West Bank.
